Categorizing Theft Crimes

The crime you are charged with will depend on the value of the stolen property or services. The circumstances of the incident – such as whether threats or violence were used – may also result in a more severe conviction.

Tennessee categorizes theft crimes as:

  • Class A misdemeanor: The stolen property is worth $1,000 or less; punishment includes less than one year of imprisonment and a fine of no more than $2,500
  • Class E felony: Stolen property is valued between $1,000 - $2,500; punishment includes 1-6 years in prison and a fine not exceeding $3,000
  • Class D felony: The property stolen is valued between $2,500 - $10,000; punishment includes 2-12 years in prison and a fine up to $5,000
  • Class C felony: Stolen property is worth $10,000 - $60,000; punishment includes 3-15 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines
  • Class B felony: The stolen property is valued at $60,000 - $250,000; punishment includes 8-30 years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000
  • Class A felony: Stolen property is worth $250,000 or more.
